Many professional athletes are now warning young people about the dangers of using steroids to “buff up” their bodies. They are saying that, a generation ago, they did not know that long-term steroid use has extremely damaging effects on the human body. Now we know that steroids can cause cysts in the liver which can lead to tumors, hepatitis and cancer.

Steroids interfere with the body’s ability to produce natural hormones, so men using them may eventually experience shrunken testicles, impotence and problems with erections. They may father children with birth defects. Women taking steroids experience miscarriages, still births and menstrual problems.

Steroid users are notorious for “roid rage,” “flying off the handle,” poor impulse control and fits of anger. They are more at risk for criminal violence and often demonstrate poor judgment, mood swings and mental problems.

Unethical coaches and trainers often get people started on steroids by calling them “food supplements.” Sometimes people taking them do not realize they are using a product so detrimental to their health. Once they become hooked, steroids are easily available to them on the Internet and at gyms.

It is hard to stop using steroids once you start. If you attempt to, withdrawal symptoms are depression, mood swings, restlessness, insomnia, loss of appetite and reduced sexual drive. People who are overly obsessed with their body images do not like losing the increased strength and muscle mass that steroids cause, making it hard for them to give up their drugs.

Steroid users often suffer from low self-esteem and feelings that they will not be accepted unless their bodies appear a certain way. For this reason, they need to undergo professional counseling to help them develop more realistic views of themselves and more self-acceptance. Steroid users have often been pursuing an entire lifestyle of workouts and athleticism, and it may take time to find other pursuits and interests.
